SCANNING SERVICES
The IUPUI Testing Center now provides optical scanning services for IUPUI faculty and staff who wish to use this technology for their tests, assessments, and surveys. In addition, the Center has the capability of developing forms that can be optically scanned for use with surveys, course evaluations, and related instruments.
Scanning for university-based instruction, research, or related activities is $0.15 per score-sheet. When dropping off scoresheets for scanning, you should have an university account number and object code against which to bill the scanning job.
Forms or survey design work is ideal for modest-sized data collection efforts that do not require off-set printing. For example, creating a form and scanning it can be a cost-effective alternative to hiring someone to keypunch the results of a survey into a database or statistical analysis package. A fee of $45.00 an hour will be charged for this service. Analysis or survey results can also be contracted at the same hourly rate. We would be happy to work with you on building this service in as part of a research or grant program.
Course evaluation is another service that is offered by the Testing Center. We currently support the IU Multi-Op System, and provide a mechanism for a school or unit to design their own evaluation form. Evaluation forms are ordered early in the semester, are laser-printed, scanned, and returned shortly after data collection is completed. Results of the course evaluations can be printed out, e-mailed, or stored on disk in a spreadsheet format. The results can be stored in a database for longitudinal tracking either on servers maintained in the Testing Center or housed in an academic unit. The cost for producing a laser-printed scoresheet is $0.15. The cost for scanning the document is also $0.15. Contact the Testing Center for costs associated with long-term secure storing of course evaluation information or customized longitudinal reporting.
WHERE TO SUBMIT TESTS AND PICK UP RESULTS
The Testing Center Scanning Office is located in the Union Building Room G015. On the south side of the Union Building is a loading zone where faculty/and or staff can park to drop off or pick up their materials. The office is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday-Friday during non-holidays.
The turnaround time for scanning is typically four business hours (except during midterms and finals when you can expect a 24-hour turnaround). Please make sure that you fill out a Test Scoring Processing Form for each test that you submit for grading.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Instructors are encouraged to use the standard IUPUI Test Scoring Form for most of their routine assessments. You may order the IUPUI Test Scoring Forms from Scanning Services. You may also order the forms directly from Office Depot at 800-401-4824 or from their website, ask for Item No. 0540617. Please contact us directly if you are planning on using a form other than the IUPUI Test Scoring Form.
To help insure the correct processing of test data, students must follow the following guidelines.
- Use only a No. 2 lead pencil when marking the Test Scoring Form. Do not use a ball point or a felt-tip pen.
- Make the marks dark and completely fill in the proper answer.
- Do not make any stray marks on the answer sheet.
- Only one correct answer per question is allowed. If more than one response per question is marked, the darkest marked response will be used as the answer. If both marks are equally dark, the test scoring program will record the answer as incorrect.
- Completely erase all mistakes. A poorly erased mistake may be interpreted as a response.
- Do not fold, staple, or tear the Test Scoring Forms. When submitting forms for processing, you must enclose them in an envelope to protect the forms.
- The student´s last name, first initial, and middle initial must be entered in the blocks provided and the corresponding letters in the grid must be blackened.
- Any other information that you want the students to write on the Test Scoring Form may be entered in the blocks and grid provided for SEC and COURSE.
- Student´s identification number, up to ten digits, must be entered in the blocks provided and the corresponding numbers in the grid must be blackened.
PREPARING THE REQUIRED KEY SHEET
A maximum of 200 questions may be scored on each test if you use the IUPUI Test Scoring Form.
A key sheet (Test Scoring Form with the correct answers marked) must be prepared by the instructor and submitted with each group of tests to be scored. The following information must be on the key sheet for your test scores to be scanned.
Only one correct answer per question is allowed.
Print your last name, first initial, middle initial, section number, and course number in the spaces provided. Blacken the corresponding letter or number in each grid. This information will appear in the report headings.
Write the number of the last question on the test in the spaces provided below the blocks labeled A B C (i.e. 050, you would put a 5 in space B and a 0 in space C). Then blacken the corresponding number in each grid.
Questions not answered on the key sheet will not be scored.
What Kind of Information Will I Receive Back?
There are four kinds of statistical feedback that you may elect in a test score report. These include the following:
- Statistics (Test) - Includes, Test Name, Test Date, Number of Students, Number of Items, Maximum Point Value, Highest Score, Lowest Score, Median, Mean, Standard Deviation.
- Statistics(Question) - Gives various Statistics including p-value, distribution, and point-biserial correlation.
- Scores (Group) - Prints raw scores, percentages, and letter grades (if available), as well as code information such as: Student ID, and Student Name.
- Scores (Individual) - Students Name, Id, Score, Percentage, Points, Correct Answer, Incorrect Answer.
Optionally, if you choose an e-mail or disk-based report, you may elect to have the Group scores e-mailed to you.
For questions, please contact the Scanning Office at 274-3325.
